Pre-election polling sites: Not just open on Tuesdays anymore About 30 million people already have voted in 34 states and the District of Columbia, either by mail or in person. In a Washington Post-ABC poll, 27 percent of all likely voters said they had cast their ballots. Data on early voting seemed to show Democrats with an edge in several key states, although not as wide as the advantages Obama held four years ago. Here’s a look at the polling sites, before Tuesday’s elections.

Voters walk into the Franklin County in-person absentee voting location to cast their ballot in Columbus, Ohio. The Ohio secretary of state’s office said Saturday that, statewide, 1.6 million people had voted by mail or in person as of Nov. 2, a figure that puts the state on track to top 2008 early-vote tallies. Public polls in Ohio show President Obama holds a wide lead over Mitt Romney among voters who have voted since polls opened to early voters Oct. 2.

Voters take a picture with signs after casting their ballots at the Franklin County in-person absentee voting location in Columbus, Ohio. Outside polling has consistently shown Obama winning early voters there by double digits: About a quarter of likely voters in the state have cast ballots. A study released last month by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law underscored why early voting favored Democrats: Black voters, who overwhelmingly favor Obama, used early in-person voting at about 26 times the rate of white voters.
