Why He Matters
Denny Heck was born in Vancouver, Wash., and now resides in Olympia. He earned a bachelor's degree from The Evergreen State College. Heck was elected in 1976 to the first of five terms in the state House, representing the 17th District that covered Clark, Skamania and Klickitat counties. He served as majority leader, and also co-chaired the Education Committee. He then served as chief of staff for former Gov. Booth Gardner from 1989 to 1993. Heck made his first run for Congress in 2010, when he sought an open seat in the 3rd Congressional District. He lost to Republican Jaime Herrera Beutler. Heck co-founded the TVW public affairs network in 1993, co-owns a company that owns and manages commercial buildings in the state, and is a co-founder of Intrepid Learning, a workplace education company. Heck and his wife, Paula, have two sons.
