The Air Force has ten major commands, organized on a functional and geographic basis. Its pilots are organized into wings, which may operate more than one type of aircraft.

Since 2008, a priority for the Air Force has been to reinforce its flagging efforts on nuclear operations. Its work also extends into space, where it operates military communications satellites and develops missile-warning systems, and into cyberspace, where it focuses on protecting networks.
