Drew Hammill

Deputy communications director and Press secretary, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) (since December 2010)

Why He Matters

As incoming House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) press secretary and deputy communications director, Hammill is a key voice for Pelosi in the press. He works with the communications team to craft and convey Pelosi's message, and the message of House Democrats.

Hammill got his start working for up-and-coming young Florida Rep. Kendrick Meek (D), and significantly helped raise Meek's profile. Now, Hammill's day is spent responding to the stream of questions from journalists, all clamoring for the incoming House minority leader's take on an unending variety of issues. But when he's not playing defense, Hammill also has a keen eye for creating press opportunities that let Pelosi showcase the Democratic message.

The Issues

Hammill is one of only a handful of people authorized to speak on behalf of the Pelosi, and he does it a lot. "Ninety percent of [my job] is talking with reporters," Hammill said, "putting [Pelosi's] viewpoint into whatever they're working on."

"I think my favorite part of this job is waking up and reading a story that you've helped shape," he said.
