Pawlenty played ice hockey in high school. During his campaign for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, he used footage from the 1980 USA men's hockey team's "Miracle on Ice" to symbolize his campaign's need for a "comeback."

Despite his long career in politics, Pawlenty originally wanted to study dentistry at the University of Minnesota.

Pawlenty's political career began at the age of 28 when he joined the planning commission of Eagan, Minn., a suburb of St. Paul. He was later elected to the Eagan City Council before entering state politics.
