Why He Matters

The dean of Virginia's congressional delegation and the sole Republican representing the Washington D.C. area, Wolf is known best for pushing transportation funds for the region and championing global human rights.

His human-rights efforts have drawn particular praise from both sides of the aisle with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) calling him "an unmatched leader in his commitment to human rights." He also conceived the Iraq Study Group, a bipartisan panel that made recommendations about the direction of the war in 2006.

Path to Power

Wolf was born in 1939 in Philadelphia, where he grew up the son of a police officer.

After attending the University of Mississippi, Wolf graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1961. Wolf received his law degree from Georgetown University in 1965.

The Issues

Wolf is a moderate Republican who voted with his party 88.3 percent of the time during the 110th Congress.

Among his more high-profile breaks with his party includes backing the fall 2008, $700-billion financial bailout and voting to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program, which fell victim to President Bush's 2007 veto.

Wolf's co-chairman on the House Human Rights Commission is Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.).

He sits on the Human Rights Commission with an ecletic mix of lawmakers that includes Reps. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.),Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Chris Smith (R-N.J.), Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), among others.
