Why He Matters

His first job was working as an office manager and scheduler for then-Rep. J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.). After winning Illinois' hotly-contested 14th district in November 2010, Hultgren reclaimed his first boss' former House seat.

An Illinois state legislator since 1998, Hultgren has earned a reputation as an adamant conservative. The businessman and former lawyer has voted for small business-friendly tax policies and for a bill that would require prayer time in public schools.

The Issues

Hultgren proudly describes himself as a "real conservative," an assertion that is easily supported by his record in the Illinois legislature. A businessman and former lawyer, Hultgren has consistently voted conservatively on myriad economic and social issues.

While he is focusing his 2010 House campaign on fiscal conservatism and his track record of helping small businesses - he's received several awards from the Illinois Chamber of Commerce - Hultgren has also developed a reputation in Illinois as a strong abortion foe and right-to-life advocate.
