Why He Matters
Goodwin was appointed to the Senate in July 2010 after the death of Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.). Though Byrd wouldn't have faced reelection until 2012, West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin (D) appointed Goodwin to serve only until the November 2010 general election, when voters would decide who would serve out the final two years of Byrd's term.
The Charleston, W.Va., lawyer came from a prominent family in the state and had served from 2005 to 2009 as general counsel to Gov. Manchin (D). Goodwin was only 36-years-old at the time of his appointment.
