Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.)

U.S. Representative (since March 1983)

(Congressional Pictorial
Directory)

Why He Matters

First elected in 1983, Ackerman represents New York's 5th district, which is made up of Queens and suburban Nassau County. A bit of an eccentric, Ackerman wears a white carnation every day and lives on a houseboat called the Unsinkable II when in Washington, D.C. (the Unsinkable I sank).

With a perch on the House Financial Services Committee and many of his constituents affected by the 2008-2009 financial crisis, Ackerman has zealously attacked the Securities and Exchange Commission as "worthless" and demanded that the government refund 13 years of taxes to victims of jailed financier Bernie Madoff's "phantom profits."

Path to Power

Gary Ackerman was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on November 19, 1942. Raised in Flushing, Queens, he attended Brooklyn Technical High School and earned a degree from Queens College in 1965. He then went on to teach social studies, math and journalism in New York City public schools for five years.

In 1970, Ackerman founded the weekly Queens Tribune, a community newspaper he edited and published. He sold the paper to Jerry Finkelstein in 1978, the same year he was elected to the New York Senate. Ackerman served in the state Senate for five years before joining Congress in 1983.

The Issues

Ackerman is a liberal Democrat known for his acerbic and often humorous speaking style. He regularly takes up pet causes, for which he fights loudly and publicly. He helped pass the so-called "Baby AIDS" legislation, which required HIV testing of newborns and disclosure of results to their mothers, and pushed for the "Heroes" postage stamp to be created after 9/11.

In the early 2000s, Ackerman successfully fought to ban the commercial slaughter of "downed" animals - livestock that have been sick, injured or deceased - which he argued could cause Mad Cow disease. He also pushed for visitors to Hawaii to be allowed to travel with their Seeing Eye dogs.
