Beck sees himself as creating "the fusion of entertainment and enlightenment."
Drawn to the radio from an early age, Beck overcame alcoholism and navigated a career that took him from being a relatively obscure DJ who played Top 40 hits with a dose of zany antics, to a media star and national political force.
Beck was born on February 10, 1964 in Everett, Washington, but spent his childhood in Mount Vernon, just north of Seattle, where his father William ran a bakery.
His interest in radio dates back to the age of eight, when his mother Mary bought him "The Golden Years of Radio," a two-record set of old radio recordings, which included Orson Welles' classic rendition of "The War of the Worlds."
Beck has described himself as a libertarian, but has cautioned that he's often at odds with them because he supports a "strong national defense."
At the same time, he has questioned whether American needs and can afford maintaining so many military bases around the world.
Pat Gray, who Beck first met when they worked together in Baltimore in 1990, serves as a co-host of Beck's radio show and remains a close friend. Gray also baptized Beck into the Mormon church.
