Why He Matters
Though only 34-years old when he took office, Nye already had a long resume in diplomacy. A veteran of the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Virginia Democrat has drawn accolades for his work in Afghanistan, the Middle East and the Balkans.
In 2008, Nye ran for Congress appealing to military voters in Virginia's 2nd district, which includes Norfolk Navy Base and Langley Air Force Base, and hoping to affect U.S. policy in Iraq and Afghanistan. After taking office, Nye made waves on naval and veterans' issues and made visits to the two war zones. A Blue Dog Democrat, the freshman was aggressively courted in the health-care debate on Capitol Hill (he ultimately voted "no").
