Brown easily won re-election his first three times, but in 2008 faced a difficult challenge from Linda Ketner (D), who he defeated by four points. The close election in a solidly Republican district has led some local Republican leaders to begin searching for a Brown primary foe in 2010, and they seemed to have found one in Carroll Campbell, the son to the state's former Gov. Carroll Campbell (R).

But Brown ultimately retired, and the open seat race was won by Tim Scott (R), one of two black Republicans elected to a GOP-led House in 2010.
