Howard Dean
Founder of Democracy for America PAC (since 2004)

Dean was the governor of the second-smallest state in the U.S. when he catapulted onto the national stage with a grassroots campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004.
A dark horse's dark horse, Dean's campaign rocketed to fame through his surprising success in raising small sums of money from Internet donors invigorated by his anti-war, anti-George W. Bush stance.

The son, grandson and great-grandson of investment bankers, Dean grew up in a Manhattan high-rise and vacationed in Sag Harbor, N.Y. He attended St. George's boarding school just outside of tony Newport, R.I.
From there, Dean went to Yale University, where he earned his bachelor's in 1971.
Dean's grassroots support remains, and in February 2009 that support took the form of a blog- and Facebook-driven campaign to draft the doctor as HHS secretary after Obama's first choice, former Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.), withdrew his name over tax problems.
In March 2009, Obama chose Kansas Gov. Sebelius (D) instead. But that didn't slow Dean down. In April 2009, he launched a "Stand with Dr. Dean" web site to advocate for a government-funded health-insurance option to be offerered alongside private insurance.
As the former DNC head, Dean has a vast Democratic rolodex (though the web-savvy Dean might prefer a blackberry). But not all establishment Democrats like him as he has often backed unpopular positions and upstart candidates.
Nonetheless, Obama White House Political Director Patrick Gaspard supported Dean during the 2004 Democratic contest, and he was national field director for America Coming Together, a 527 group that focused on voter turnout. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is a longtime friend, and Jill Biden communications director Courtney O'Donnell worked on Dean's 2004 campaign.
The last campaign contribution Dean made was in 1994, when he gave $200 to the Vermont State Democratic Committee, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
