Conway is no stranger to carrying Democratic hopes. One of Democrats best chances to capture a Senate seat in the terrible political climate for his party in 2010, he lost to tea-partier Rand Paul (R) in Kentucky's open Senate race.
In 2002, his challenge to a Republican incumbent provided Democrats one of their best opportunities to pick up a House seat, but Conway narrowly lost in a tough environment for his party. Eight years later, he was once again a rare Democrat in a position to capture a Republican seat; this time, he faced
- Career History: Kentucky Attorney General (2008-present); Trial attorney (2002-2007); Deputy general counsel, then deputy secretary in Gov. Patton's (D-Ky.) administration (1995-2001)
- Birthday: July 5, 1969
- Hometown: Louisville
- Alma Mater: B.A. from Duke University (1991); J.D. from George Washington University (1995)
- Spouse: Elizabeth Conway
Born in Louisville in 1969, Conway graduated from Duke University in 1991. He then moved to Washington, where he attended the George Washington University Law School and worked as a legislative aide to the House Banking Committee. After earning his J.D. in 1995, he returned to Kentucky to help the gubernatorial campaign of Democrat Paul Patton.
First political steps
When Patton was elected governor that fall, Conway was hired as his executive cabinet's deputy general counsel; he later became deputy secretary.
As Kentucky attorney general, Conway created an investigative unit to fight cybercrime - identity theft, child pornography and sexual predators. He also supported the death penalty and efforts to impose mandatory sentences for drug dealers. Over the years, Conway has touted other efforts to toughen crime laws; for instance, his work to eliminate parole for violent offenders while working for Gov. Paul Patton (D).
The Economy
In his Senate campaign, Conway emphasized his proposal to use the bailout funds being returned by big banksto give tax credits to job-creating businesses. He also came out in favor of extending President Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy and prolonging a suspension of the estate tax. "I don't think that a recession is any time to raise taxes," he said.
Conway has been a close ally of state Auditor Crit Luallen. He worked under Luallen in Gov. Paul Patton's (D-Ky.) administration; she went on to become his daughter's godmother.
In his tough 2010 primary, Conway benefitted from early endorsements from prominent state Democrats. Before announcing his candidacy, he had indicated that he was in talks with Luallen and Rep. Ben Chandler (D-Ky.) to decide which of the three would run against LG Mongiardo.
