Why She Matters

Only 31-years-old when she declared her run for the U.S. House, Herrera was one of a slew of Republican female candidates who rose to prominence in 2010, hoping to help Republicans regain control of Congress. She won.

Herrera worked as a legislative aide to Washington Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), the vice-chair of the House GOP Conference in the 111th Congress, for two years before being named to the Washington state legislature when her predecessor was caught in a sex scandal.

Path To Power

Herrera was born in Glendale, Calif. and grew up in southwest Washington state.

She matriculated at Seattle Pacific University. But she took time off for an internship at the George W. Bush White House and to volunteer. Her alumni magazine said she logged 2,000 hours as a volunteer at Ground Zero after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The Issues

In 2010, Herrera was one of the young Republicans swept into office on a wave of anti-incumbent sentiment.

Herrera herself admitted that voters weren't angry with just one party. "Quite frankly, the Republicans let me down, too," she told reporters.

The Network

Herrera worked as a legislative aide to Washington Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R) from 2005 until 2007. In her 2010 House race, Herrera won an endorsement from Rodgers, now the House GOP Conferece vice-chairwoman.
