The first female governor of Michigan, Granholm is a former beauty queen who ascended to the state's highest office after only four years as state attorney general. She was 43 at the time. Currently in her second term, Granholm is ineligible to run for a third term because of term limits.
In late 2008, Granholm emerged on the national scene as a staunch advocate for the embattled American auto industry. "The industry has recognized that it must change, and that it must step on the gas, so to speak, to make those changes happen," she said. "They're in the middle of these restructuring plans and they want to lead us to this new energy future. Let's give them the money to bridge to that future."
- Career History: Michigan Attorney General (1998-2002); Corporation Counsel, Wayne County (1994-1998); Prosecutor, U.S. Attorney's Office, (1991-1994)
- Birthday: February 5, 1959
- Hometown: Northville, Mich.
- Alma Mater: Harvard University, J.D. 1987University of California, B.A. 1984
- Spouse: Daniel Mulhern
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Granholm moved to California at the age of four when her father's job took the family there. After becoming a U.S. citizen at 18 she moved to Los Angeles to become an actress.
She graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts but never landed a role, earning a living as a tour guide at Universal Studios and Marine World Africa USA. At 21 she was accepted into the University of California at Berkeley and after graduating in 1984, entered Harvard Law School, where she edited the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Law Review. Before graduating with her J.D. in 1987, Granholm met Dan Mulhern, her future husband and a Michigan native, who would take the future governor back to Michigan.
Given Michigan's tumultuous economic state, Granholm has spent much of her two terms as governor trying to resurrect the economy. As General Motors was forced to file bankruptcy on June 1, 2009, Granholm supported the action as a path toward recovery. Without the Obama administration steering GM and Chrysler toward a controlled bankruptcy, she said, "these companies, I believe, would have gone into liquidation."
After the bankruptcy filing, Granholm said she was encouraged that the state had hit rock bottom "I feel like the bleeding is about to be over," she said. "GM will be stronger."
Though Granholm endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2008 presidential primaries, she eventually swung her support to Barack Obama and worked for his transition team.
Granholm has often worked with Michigan Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D) and Carl M. Levin (D) on legislation benefitting the state.
