Path to Power
Jim Costa was born in Fresno, Calif., on a family farm on April 13, 1952. His grandparents were Portuguese immigrants.
He attended California public schools and served as a Capitol Hill intern during the Watergate hearings in 1973. He graduated from California State University, Fresno in 1974.
Costa, the most conservative of California's DemocraticHouse members, has voted with his party 95.6 percent of the time in the 111th Congress. He is a member of the fiscally-conservative Blue Dog Coalition and keeps a running national debt clock on his official web site.
Costa had to be pleased to be assigned to the Agriculture and Natural Resources committees, both vital to his agriculture-heavy home district.
Costa has an affinity for his fellow California congressmen of Portuguese descent, including Reps. Devin Nunez (R) and Dennis Cardoza (D).
Costa worked with fellow California congressman Tom Lantos (D), the former chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, before Lantos' death in 2008.
