(Governor's office)
Gibbons has been a commercial airline pilot, a hydrologist, a mining and exploration geologist, a water-rights attorney, the Republican whip of Nevada's state assembly, vice commander of Nevada's Air National Guard, a U.S. congressman, and the governor of Nevada.
He also seems to be a scandal magnet. A Las Vegas cocktail waitress accused him of assault in 2006; no criminal charges have been filed but a civil suit is pending. A Wall Street Journal report said that Gibbons had taken a Caribbean cruise that was paid for by a friend whom Gibbons had helped get a federal contract; the Justice Department has cleared him. His 2008 divorce proceedings, in which he has been accused of three affairs (including with a former Playboy model),were messy and very public

James "Jim" Gibbons was born on Dec. 16, 1944 and raised in Sparks, Nev. He earned his B.S. in geology from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1967 and a master's degree in mining/geology from the University of Nevada's Mackay School of Mines in 1973. In between earning his degrees, Gibbons served in the U.S. Air Force as a combat pilot in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1971.
He joined the Air National Guard in 1975 and rose to the rank of colonel. From 1990 to 1996 he was the Nevada Air National Guard's Vice Commander.
Gibbons is a small-government conservative, as shown most recently in Nevada's battle over domestic partnerships. In May 2009, Gibbons vetoed a measure sent to him from the state legislature that would grant domestic partners many of the same legal rights as married couples.
"The governor believes that government has no business in your medicine chest or your bedroom," a Gibbons spokesman said. "He also believes there are existing contracts that can be created, so no change to the law is needed. If there are people who want to be domestic partners, they can do so under existing laws. He is also mindful of the fact that voters of this state on two occasions [in 2000 and 2002] have said that marriage is between a man and a woman, and it's part of our Constitution." On May 31, 2009, the state Assembly joined the state Senate and voted by a two-thirds majority to override the governor.
As his political fortunes declnined, Gibbons is lost friends fast.
Michael Montandon, the mayor of North Las Vegas, was once a supporter and is now challenging Gibbons for the Republican nomination for governor in 2010.
