When Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) died in August 2009, many speculated that Tierney would be a leading contender for his seat. But the Massachusetts Democrat squelched such talk by declining to run early on, stating that he wanted to use his House seniority to advance important projects.
Tierney is a favorite among top House Democrats because of his active leadership on education and labor issues, and holds a speaker-appointed seat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
Born in Salem, Mass., to a lower middle-class family, Tierney attended Salem public schools, and during high school, served as a golf caddy at a local country club. He later bagged groceries and taught tennis, and eventually graduated from Salem State College. He earned a law degree from Suffolk University and, until he took office in January 1997, was partner in the law firm of Tierney, Kalis, and Lucas for over 20 years.
Tierney has been a vocal proponent for education, labor and health-care reform, rising as a leader among House Democrats, and sitting on the Education and Labor, Oversight and Government Reform and Intelligence committees.
The Boston Globe has called Tierney an advocate for kitchen-table issues: education, health care, pensions and jobs. The left-leaning Democrat reliably votes along liberal ideological lines. According to the Washington Post Votes database, Tierney has voted with Democrats 97.5 percent of the time in the 111th Congress.
The Massachusetts Democrat's strong pro-gun control record earned him an "F" from the National Rifle Association in 2008. He has voted to allow embryonic stem-cell research, and against banning late-term abortion. He has also voted against bans on same-sex marriage, against making the USA Patriot Act permanent and against authorization of the Iraq war.
Tierney is close to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). He often golfs with Beverly, Mass. Mayor William Scanlon. Tierney's staff includes Betsy Arnold, Kevin McDermott and Catherine Ribeiro.
Tierney co-sponsored the 2007 Green Jobs Act with then-California lawmaker and Obama Labor Secretary Hilda Solis. He hosted former Obama green jobs czar Van Jones on his cable-news show.
