Why He Matters

Rove, who at age 9 cheered for Republican Richard Nixon to defeat Democrat John F. Kennedy in the 1960 presidential race, became one of the most powerful and controversial backstage political operatives of his generation. Admirers cite Rove's winning track record and lifelong effort to create a lasting national Republican majority. Detractors deride him for a ruthless, win-at-all-costs campaign style, yet few willingly crossed him.

Rove is credited with transforming Texas from a century-old Democratic bastion to a ruby-red Republican state, but is best known as the powerful strategic force behind the rise of George W. Bush, first to the Texas governor's mansion and then the White House. Rove's outsized influence in Bush's ascent earned him the nicknames "Boy Genius" and "Bush's Brain." Bush, acknowledging Rove's role in his own success, called him "The Architect."And indeed, Rove can be credited for successfully building the 2000 Republican phenomenon that was George W. Bush's presidential campaign, despite its historically narrow margins, and in helping Republicans increase their numbers, at least temporarily, on Capitol Hill.

Path To Power

Karl Christian Rove was born on Christmas Day in 1950 in Denver, though his family soon left for Nevada and then Utah, where on Rove's 19th birthday, his father, Louis Rove, left the family.

Rove soon learned that Louis Rove was gay and not his biological father. Rove's mother, Reba, committed suicide, in Reno, Nevada, in 1981.

The Issues

Rove is known for being able to juggle myriad campaign matters, from polling to fundraising to message development, while never losing sight of the long-term strategic goals he set for his candidates and his party. He was so successful in Texas that any Republican candidate who approached potential financial supporters was first asked if they'd hired Rove.

But the key to Rove's ascent was his connection to the Bush family, which dates back to the 1970s.George H.W. Bush first hired Rove to work for him at the Republican National Committee in Washington and then for his presidential exploratory committee.

The Network

Rove's ties to former presidents George H.W. Bush and his son, George W. Bush, go back to the 1970s. Rove was such a strong force behind the younger Bush's rise in politics, that Bush dubbed Rove "The Architect."

Rover also aided the 2002 Senate campaign of John Cornyn (R-Texas), who became a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, a perch from which he argued against the committee's decision to charge Rove with contempt after Rove failed to appear for hearings on the firings of the U.S. attorneys.
