(Va. AG office)
In his first few months in office, Cuccinelli was already making good on his 2009 campaign promises to go beyond the traditional duties of Virginia's top legal office and actively fight for divisive social causes important to his conservative base, from battling the "homosexual agenda" to resisting the expansion of the federal government.
Cuccinelli warned Virginia's colleges and universities that their anti-discrimination policies couldn't protect gays. He injected Virginia into the international debate over global warming, legally challenging the Environmental Protection Agency's decision to regulate greenhouse gases. And he became one of the nation's most prominent adversaries of President Barack Obama's historic health-care reforms by immediately filing a lawsuit claiming they were unconstitutional. In February 2011, he announced he would bypass an intermediary court and appeal directly to the U.S. Supreme Court to review the state's challenge to the health-care law.
Kenneth Thomas Cuccinelli II, known to friends as Ken or "Cooch,"was born in New Jersey but grew up in Virginia's Washington, D.C., suburbs.
He first majored in mechanical engineering at the University of Virginia before deciding on a legal career, opening his own firm, Cuccinelli & Day, in Northern Virginia and marrying Alice "Teiro" Monteiro, who grew up just three doors down from his Fairfax boyhood home.
Cuccinelli has an unalloyed conservative record in his eight years as a Virginia state senator and emerged in his first few months as attorney general as a conservative antidote to Obama and the Democratic Congress.
His brash brand of activism contrasts sharply to fellow Republicans like McDonnell who are trying to broaden the GOP's appeal with a more pragmatic, moderate approach. But to the unapologetic Cuccinelli, Republicans have been relegated to the minority in Virginia and Washington "because Republicans abandoned their core principles."
Cuccinelli's conservative activism has complicated matters for Gov. Bob McDonnell (R), who has tried to project a more pragmatic image. But McDonnell remains supportive.
Virginia's new attorney general also won endorsements from 2008 Republican presidential contenders Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, and Fred Thompson, the former Tennessee senator.
