(Schrader House office)
Aided by a surge in Democratic registrations and a scandal-prone opponent, Schrader avoided the tough contests faced by other Democratic candidates and his predecessor in the competitive seat, taking his House seat with relative ease in 2008.
But with a terrible national political environment for Democrats in 2010, he was in real trouble against state Rep. Scott Bruun (R) that year. Nonetheless, the incumbent prevailed by a comparatively large five percentage points (results here).

Schrader was born in 1951 in Bridgeport, Conn., and raised in a Republican family where talking about politics at the dinner table was the norm. His interest in James Madison, the fourth U.S. president, pushed him toward a life of public service by teaching him the importance of being personally involved.
The family settled in Illinois, where Schrader attended high school before he received his degree in government from Cornell University.
Through June 2010, Schrader had voted with House Democrats 97.1 percent of the time.
In 2010, Schrader successfully worked with other members of Oregon's congressional delegation to ensure that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration moved its Pacific fleet to Newport, Ore., rather than a post in Washington state.
Schrader worked closely with Oregon Democratic Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden on bringing the NOAA's Pacific fleet to Oregon.
Schrader's network includes fellow Blue Dogs like coalition co-chairs Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-S.D.), Baron Hill (D-Ind), Jim Matheson (D-Utah), and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.).
