Laura Petrou

Former Chief of Staff to HHS Secretary (April 2009-March 2011)

Why She Matters

As chief of staff to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Petrou worked behind the scenes to keep the secretary's office running and advance Sebelius' agenda.

That meant overseeing a $70 billion department, while at the same time trying to steer historic health-care reform legislation through Congress.

The Issues

Petrou had the mighty task of helping Secretary Sebelius manage a $70 billion agency and its 65,000 employees, all the while working behind the scenes to push President Obama's top legislative priority: health-care reform.

Petrou is known more for her management expertise than for her health-policy experience. Still, after 20 years with Daschle, she has had plenty of time to become immersed in the health-care debate. She's one of a handful of Daschle acolytes still in top positions in the Obama administration, even after Daschle himself withdrew his nomination to an administration position over about $140,000 in unpaid taxes.

The Network

Petrou worked for Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) for two decades, and is one of many former Daschle aides influencing the health-care debate. Daschle's longtime chief of staff, Pete Rouse, is now a top Obama adviser. Another Daschle ally, Mark Childress, gave up his HHS slot to Petrou to advise the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) on health-reform in the Senate.

At HHS, Petrou reported directly to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and worked closely with her deputy William V. Corr.
