The Hazleton, Pa. mayor who made headlines cracking down on illegal immigration showed that the third time was the charm when he defeated Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski (D-Pa.) in the 2010 midterms. (Results here.)
A strong conservative, Barletta had lost to Kanjorski in 2002 and 2008.

Barletta was born and raised in Hazleton, Pa., the city he would later run as mayor. His father, a Democratic chairman, ran road construction and heating oil businesses with the help of his three sons.
Barletta graduated from Hazleton High School and attended Luzerne County Community College and Bloomsburg State College. He left college early to try out for the Cincinnati Reds Major League Baseball team, but he joked to the St. Petersburg Times that he was sent home when they figured out he couldn't hit a curve ball.
Barletta's tenure as Hazleton's chief executive was a high-profile one. Barletta passed a headline-making city ordinance that took harsh measures against illegal immigrants.
He also crafted controversial plans, one to sell the city's water authority and build a solar plant, one to build a massive amphitheater, both designed to save his small city from it's $2 million debt and unemployment numbers that skyrocketed to 14.8 percent in 2010.
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) headlined a fundraiser for Barletta in 2010.
Barletta also got help campaigning in 2008 and 2010 from House Republican Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio).
