Aguilar was born in November 1953 in Cuba and arrived in the United States in 1960.
He graduated from Georgia Southern University in 1976 with a bachelor's degree and from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1979. He also received a master's degree in taxation from Emory University in 1985.
Sarbanes-Oxley
Aguilar has also come under fire for his public comments questioning the effectiveness of the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley law, which was passed to increase corporate accountability in light of accounting scandals on Wall Street.
"Sarbanes-Oxley was a political response to serious breaches in honesty and fiduciary responsibility. As a political response I think it was quickly and hastily done to address public confidence issues," Aguilar said in an interview with LawCrossing.com in 2004. "Although there's some good stuff in there, there's also some additional burdensome cost imposed on corporate America. I'm not sure the cost benefit analysis has balanced out."
DSCC Chairman Menendez (D-N.J.) promoted Aguilar to fill the last SEC commissioner's shoes.
He serves on the SEC with Commissioners Walter, Kathleen Casey and Troy Paredes.
Aguilar has been an active donor to political campaigns in recent years, largely giving to Democratic candidates, including New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Connecticut Sen. Christopher J. Dodd, former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kerry and President Barack Obama.
Aguilar has also given money to the Democratic and Republican national committees and the campaign of Rep. John Lewis, a Democratic congressman from his native Georgia.
