Throughout her 2010 House campaign, Roby invoked her "common sense conservative vision" as a way to stop "wasteful spending and job killing legislation coming out of Washington."
During the campaign, Roby criticized cap-and-trade policies to fight climate change as an example of House Democrats' "job killing" agenda. "With Nancy Pelosi in charge, we can expect Cap and Trade and more to come down [the] pike," she said.
On agriculture, Roby supports protecting programs for farmers that offset losses that may be caused by natural conditions. She also supports developing Alabama's biofuels industry.
Roby supports giving local schools more control over education policy and has said she would favor "shrinking down" the U.S. Department of Education.
Roby supports "don't ask, don't tell" policies governing homosexuals in the military.
Immigration
As a Montgomery City Council member, Roby led a committee focused on illegal immigration. She has said she will take a hard-line against illegal immigrants in the House.
At an August 2010 debate, Roby outlined her stance on the issue, saying both securing the border and law enforcement were key. "I will never support any legislation with the word 'amnesty' in it." She also said she supported an Arizona state law that allows local law enforcement to check the status of suspected illegal immigrants.
While he was Montgomery's mayor, Bobby Bright criticized Roby and the City Council panel for not moving quickly enough on a proposal to revoke licenses for businesses that hire illegal immigrants. A city law passed in March 2008, later than Bright had hoped. "I led the charge fighting illegal immigration in the City of Montgomery," Roby said.
Health-Care Reform
Roby opposed the March 2010 health-care reform plan. In January 2010, before the final bill was enacted, Roby signed the Club for Growth's "Repeal It!" pledge, promising to sponsor legislation to repeal "federal control of the health care system" immediately after she joined thew House.
Roby also says she will seek changes to the plan, including ending government mandates, allowing people to purchase insurance across state lines and instituting tort reform.
Federal Spending and Taxes
In 2010, Roby campaigned on slashing federal spending and debt, pointing at municipalities being required to maintain a balanced budget. "The same should be true for the federal government," Roby said.
A prominent theme in her 2010 campaign's "Roadmap for Alabama" was cutting federal taxes and spending. On spending, she advocated a balanced budget amendment, granting the president line-item veto power and reforming the earmarking process. On taxes, she called for permanently extending the 2001 and 2001 Bush tax cuts for everybody and abolishing the estate tax.
Roby doesn't support privatizing Social Security as a means of reforming the entitlement program. Responding to Democratic "scare tactics" during her House campaign, she said in a statement: "I do not support increasing the retirement age. I do not support raising taxes or cutting benefits."
