Stanislaus was born in Sri Lanka and emigrated to the United States. He is an environmental lawyer and chemical engineer.
Before joining the EPA, he co-founded and co-directed New Partners for Community Revitalization, Inc. (NPCR), a non-profit organization based in New York. The mission of NPCR is to advance the renewal of New York's low-and-moderate income neighborhoods through the redevelopment of brownfield sites.
On Sept. 2, 2009, Stanislaus sent a letter to the EPA's land revitalization coordinators stressing the importance of cleaning up contaminated land and putting it back into use.
He stressed six points: putting affected communities in leadership positions for decision making, forming partnerships with other federal agencies and EPA offices, putting land to use as urban gardens and urban agriculture, promoting cleanup and redevelopment of areas next to transit centers, cleaning up auto industry areas and promoting the use of renewable energy.
At the EPA, Barry N. Breen serves under Stanislaus as principal deputy assistant administrator.
Lisa Jackson is the EPA Administrator and serves as Stanislaus' supervisor.
