Considered an education reformer, Bennet was the unlikely choice of then-Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter (D) to fill the open Senate seat after President Barack Obama chose Ken Salazar as his interior secretary. Bennet had never run for public office, and had less than one year to entrench himself before he won a hard-fought reelection in 2010.
Bucking the anti-incumbent tide, Bennet, a wealthy law school graduate, survived a tough primary challenge in August from former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff. In a year that was no kind to Democrats or incumbents, Bannet barely eked out a win over Ken Buck (R) in November.
