Name a prominent Democratic official and chances are Donilon has worked for them. The Georgetown law graduate has been strategizing for congressional candidates, governors and presidential hopefuls for more than two decades. He has on the campaigns of President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore and Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) among others.
Now, Donilon is hanging up his campaign hat to work for one of his oldest and closest allies: Vice President Joseph R. Biden, who he met in 1981. Donilon was Biden's travelling adviser during the 2008 general election and was named counselor in the vice president's office in November 2008.

Donilon grew up in South Providence, R.I., the son of very politically active parents.
After earning both his B.A. and his J.D. from Georgetown University, Donilon joined a political consulting firm led by Democratic heavyweights David Doak and Robert Shrum.
Donilon has worked on several high-profile Democratic campaigns at the state and federal level.
He specializes in media messaging and advertising and has produced several prominent political ad campaigns. In 1992, his work on President Bill Clinton's general election campaign was hailed for ushering in a new style of marketing that catered to a younger audience by working through television channels like MTV.
Politics runs in the Donilon family. Brother Thomas Donilon is Obama's national security adviser and is married to Catherine Russell, chief of staff to Jill Biden .
Michael Donilon is close to both President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, thanks to his role in Clinton's successful 1992 presidential campaign.
