Path to Power
DePass, who is of Jamaican descent, grew up in Queens, N.Y.
Her career path has been diverse, including positions as a lawyer,
public administrator and policy analyst. She has worked for a number
of environmental, human and civil-rights organizations, academic
institutions and labor groups at all levels of government.
OIA's mission is to protect human health and environment while
advancing U.S. national interests through international
environmental collaboration. DePass has outlined three strategic
priorities for OIA: reducing transboundary pollution, advancing U.S.
interests abroad, and promoting good environmental governance. In
the early years of the Obama administration, DePass has made
significant headway in carrying out these priorities.
In October 2009, DePass announced a partnership between the U.S.
and Mexico. The alliance is expected to address environmental issues
that plague the U.S.-Mexico border region such as air and water
contamination, dumping and conserving natural resources. More than
$10.8 million has been set aside for improving the environment and
quality of life for communities along the border.
DePass reports to EPA administrator Lisa Jackson and is assisted
by two Deputy Assistant Administrators, Shalini Vajjhala and Kathy
Petruccelli. Her other senior aidesd include Barry Hill, senior
counsel for environmental governance, and Chief of Staff Gary
DePass was a member of the Obama transition team, representing
EPA, along with former Clinton appointee Jon Cannon, whose
nomination for deputy administrator was later withdrawn.
DePass has not made any campaign contributions, according to the
Center for Responsive Politics.
