The foreign policy advisers to Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney include several members of past administrations, past senators and noted experts.

Dan Senor

Dan Senor rose to public prominence as the chief spokesman for the Coalition Provisional Authority, a transitional government in Iraq. A staunch defender of Israel, Senor is a frequent public commentator and the co-author of “Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle.” Senor last month accompanied presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on his trip to Israel.

John R. Bolton

The former U.S. ambassador the United Nations for the George W. Bush administration is also one of the organization’s chief critics. A consummate foreign policy hawk, Bolton was a strong proponent of the Iraq invasion and favors an Israeli military strike against Iran to stop its uranium-enrichment program. He is a frequent commentator on Fox News and an op-ed contributor to the Wall Street Journal.

Eric S. Edelman

A former undersecretary of defense for policy and ambassador to Turkey, Eric S. Edelman was associated with Pentagon officials who most strongly advocated the Iraq invasion during the George W. Bush administration. In 2007, he was criticized for accusing then-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) of aiding the enemy by wanting, as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, to discuss a withdrawal timeline for U.S. troops.

John F. Lehman Jr.

Secretary of the Navy in the Reagan administration for six years, John F. Lehman Jr. is known as a hawkish defender of naval power, an issue Romney has taken up during the campaign. He also served on the 9/11 Commission.

Mitchell B. Reiss

After acting as Romney’s chief national security adviser during his failed 2008 campaign, Mitchell B. Reiss served as undersecretary of state for policy planning under Colin L. Powell at the State Department. In the past, he has advocated negotiating with the Taliban to bring the war in Afghanistan to a faster conclusion, an approach Romney has rejected.

Alex Wong

Among the youngest of this group, Alex Wong is little-known in foreign policy circles. He is listed by the Romney campaign as its director of foreign, defense and judicial policy. He serves as the chief gatekeeper for journalists and others who want to discuss foreign policy with the campaign.

Jim Talent

A former senator from Missouri, Jim Talent identifies himself as a conservative Republican. Chiefly involved in the Romney campaign’s economic team, he is a staunch defender of maintaining defense spending levels, even after the conclusion of the war in Afghanistan.

Norm Coleman

A former Republican senator from Minnesota, Norm Coleman strongly supported the war in Iraq and was a leading voice in the Senate for sanctions against Iran over its nuclear-enrichment program. He has also sponsored legislation seeking to hold Palestinians accountable for violence against Israel.

Kerry Healey

A former lieutenant governor of Massachusetts, Kerry Healey is special adviser and foreign policy coordinator for the Romney campaign, a role she also held in his 2008 effort. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice appointed Healey in 2008 to serve on the State Department’s executive committee of the Public-Private Partnership for Justice Reform in Afghanistan; Healey was reappointed to the post by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
