Elshami, who started his political career in the Senate mail room, was named as incoming House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) communications director and senior adviser in 2011 in the wake of Brendan Daly's departure.
Since he arrived in Pelosi's office in 2007, Elshami helped craft her message, trying to translate legislative priorities into talking points that House Democrats can easily communicate to the American people. As Pelosi moved from speaker to minority leader, her longtime communications director, Brendan Daly, left for the private sector. Elshami was Daly's deputy, and stepped into the top communications role at a turning point for Democrats.

Elshami's dirty little secret? He used to be a Republican.
Of course, this was back in the late 1980s, when Ronald Reagan was racking up historically high approval ratings, and Elshami, who was born in the United States but spent his early childhood in Egypt, was in high school in the conservative town of Nashville, Tenn., where his mother was earning a master's degree at Vanderbilt University.
"It's just the full message operation," Elshami said of his job in the speaker's office.
As communications director, Elshami will lead a team that develops the message for House Democrats in the minority and on the defensive in the 112th Congress. He works Deputy Communications Director Drew Hammill on creating a unified, straightforward message for House Democrats.
In his climb up Capitol Hill, Elshami has worked in the offices of many of the most influential Democrats in Congress. He began his career working for Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and moved on to the offices of Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.). He has now landed in the highest office in the House, that of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)
In the speaker's office, Elshami and Drew Hammill work under communications director Brendan Daly. John A. Lawrence is chief of staff and George Kundanis is Pelosi's deputy chief of staff.
