Newt Gingrich needs another strong performance in tonight’s GOP debate
By Aaron Blake,
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.) is looking like more of a contender every day, and he needs to continue to do what got him to that point: debate well. He will have another chance in the Republican debate on CNBC in Michigan on Wednesday night.
Gingrich has risen into the second tier of candidates in the GOP presidential race, which is almost wholly attributable to his sharp debate performances. It certainly hasn’t been a result of his money (he has very little) or a sustained media campaign.
That said, debates are often feast or famine when it comes to Gingrich. He can be either really good, or he can wander off-topic talking about arcane legislation like the banking bill “Sarbanes-Oxley” and never really make a dent.
With Herman Cain looking like damaged goods and Texas Governor Rick Perry still not a strong debater, there is a gaping hole for Gingrich to look like the steady hand on stage.
The key for Gingrich is probably not to try and appear too smart.
