Obama as consoler in chief President Obama is heading to Boston on Wednesday, two days after deadly bombings there. The trip represents another part of the president’s duties: trying to provide comfort to those who need it.

"After his speech in Normandy, a crush of people tried to get close to the president to shake his hand," says White House photographer Pete Souza. "I noticed this guy waiting patiently and then literally being pushed back into the crowd. I felt bad for him, and mentioned the incident to the president's trip director, Marvin Nicholson. Marvin pulled the guy out of the crowd, found him a wheelchair and brought him over to meet the president. He was a French veteran. The man's face shows his emotion."

"For the president, this was one of the most poignant moments of the his first term," says White House photographer Pete Souza. "He was visiting wounded warriors in the intensive care unit at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan. He had just presented a Purple Heart to Sgt. Chase Haag, who had been injured by an IED just hours before. Sgt. Haag was covered with a blanket and it was difficult to see how badly he was injured. He was also seemingly unconscious, or perhaps just asleep. The president whispered in his ear so not to wake him. Just then, there was a rustling under the blanket and Sgt. Haag, eyes still closed, reached his hand out to shake hands with the president. 'I'll never forget that moment,' someone else in the room later told me.'"
