Created by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, OSHA's mission is to ensure safe and healthy working conditions for all American workers. Its activities cover more than 7.5 million private-sector workplaces and 200,000 major construction sites involving more than 109 million workers.
On the federal and state levels, OSHA and its authorized state programs cover nearly 14 million government employees.
