Path to Power
Shiu has spent nearly three decades fighting workplace discrimination, especially when related to race and gender. She has challenged police departments on race and gender discrimination, represented a father who was denied family leave when his son was dying of AIDs, and poor women who were being paid less than men.
At the San Francisco Legal Aid Society's Employment Center, Shiu headed its Work and Family Program, which helped pass the California Medical Leave Act, and the Gender Equity Program, which covers sexual harrassment, pregnancy discrimination and unequal pay.
