Why He Matters

Gosar, a dentist and political newcomer, challenged sophomore Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz.) in the largely rural Arizona 1st district and won the House seat in 2010.

Touting his background as a small businessman and lashing out at what he called the "Washington Democrats' job-killing and burdensome agenda," Gosar swept to an easy victory in a crowded Republican primary field.

Path To Power

Gosar received his DDS from the Creighton Boyne School of Dentistry, then opened his own dentistry practice, which he has run for 25 years.

He has been involved in local politics -- Gosar led a 2001 push to add fluoride to Flagstaff, Ariz.'s water supply, although the measure was defeated in a mail-in election -- but this is his first run for political office.

The Issues

Gosar is against abortion rights and was endorsed by Arizona Right-to-Life. He believes energy independence must be a priority, sayiing that "Not only do we need to be drilling more at home, but we also need to explore all alternative options, such as bi-products, geothermal, nuclear, wind and solar energies."

He has said he would cut taxes and doesn't support increased financial regulation.
