A former drama major looking to make it on the New York stage, Hodes was introduced to politics in 1979 when he was hired out of law school to work for New Hampshire Attorney General (and now retired Supreme Court Justice) David Souter. The new life didn't require much compromise though: his political stage continued to grow bigger, and he even had the chance to perform, often with a guitar in hand
In 2010, Hodes became the Democratic Senate nominee in the Granite State. That November, he lost the race to GOP rising star Kelly Ayotte.

Hodes grew up in New York City a part of a Hungarian and Russian Jewish immigrant families, counting among his relatives the novelist Bernard Malamud. During the 1960s and '70s, Hodes became disillusioned by the Vietnam War and saw his younger brother die from Hodgkin's disease, all during a tumultuous time that he said helped shape him.
After studying French and theater at Dartmouth, Hodes returned to New York City in 1972 where he landed a role in an off-Broadway comedy. Before he headed to Boston College Law School as a fallback plan at his grandmother's suggestion, he added documentary filmmaker and playwright to his resume. In Boston, he met his wife Peggo when he answered her ad "Folk/blues duo seeks guitar player." Hodes took his strumming skills, which he's been honing since age 15, into the marriage and the couple have continued to perform, producing several child-friendly albums.
Hodes describes himself as a member of the "progressive center." Asked by the editorial page editor of the New Hampshire Union Leader about voting with his party 97.9 percent of the time during the 110th Congress, he said he is an "independent voice for New Hampshire.",
Hodes said his greatest legislative achievement has been the unanimous 2008 passage of "Michelle's Law." Inspired by a New Hampshire case, the law allowed college students to take medical leave for up to a year while allowing them to remain on their family's health insurance.
