Gingrey may not have the partisan genius of the man who formerly represented his area, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.). But he does possess his predecessor's social and economic conservative bona fides, and now, after two successive redistricting efforts, one of the most solidly Republican districts in the House.
He is aligned with the unruly House contingent that bucked Republican leaders' wishes in opposing the Wall Street bailout, and is loyal to his religious and values-voting district.
"Indeed I am a Georgia peach," Gingrey told Stephen Colbert on the satirical talk show host's regular feature segment, "Better Know a District." Granted, it was in reply to a direct question about whether he was in fact a Georgia peach, but Gingrey at least wasn't joking.
Gingrey was born in 1942 and raised about 150 miles east of Atlanta in Augusta, Ga., attending Georgia Tech and then the Medical College of Georgia. He has said that Barry Goldwater's book Conscience of a Conservative was a formative political influence in the mid-1960s, when he "started thinking about who I was" and became a conservative Republican (he also told The Hill that he doesn't have any guilty pleasure reading these days-"I stay on the straight and narrow.")
Gingrey was accused of voting blindly for President George W. Bush's proposals, which he proudly admits, at least when it comes to former president's approach to taxation. And the Georgia Republican does voted 95.3 % of the time with his party during the 111th Congress.
But Gingrey describes his partisan philosophy in genteel terms: "Having been in the trenches you learn that you don't have to be highly partisan all the time and waste political capital," he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "When you disagree with the other side, you don't embarrass them in front of their friends, you disagree in a gentlemanly manner with mutual respect."
Gingrey has reached across the aisle to co-sponsor legislation on green chemical development with Rep. Jim Marshall (D-Ga.) and to co-chair the Congressional Robotics Caucus with Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.). He co-founded the Republican Congressional Doctors Caucus with Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Pa.)
