Recipients of U.S. government’s ‘direct payments’ program

The Agriculture Department program, begun in 1996, pays farm owners, regardless of whether they actually grow a crop or even visit their farmland. The recipients include many in farm country, but also people in Manhattan and Washington. Read related article.
