Why He Matters

After three decades running a Wisconsin-based roofing business, Ribble decided to run for Congress in 2010. One of the many political outsiders across the country to rocket to success in Republican primaries, Ribble defeated incumbent Democrat Steve Kagen (Wis.), a doctor who took office in the Democratic resurgence of 2006.

By 2010, a struggling economy and an unpopular health-reform law had spawned a conservative grassroots movement that the Wisconsin Republican hoped would sweep him to victory in the 8th district.

Path To Power

Ribble was born in Neenah, Wis., where his father owned a successful roofing company.

After graduating from East Appleton High School, Ribble planned to pursue the ministry. He attended the Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music, but he left before receiving a degree.

The Issues

In 2010, Ribble used his credentials as a successful small business-owner to run on a platform of creating jobs, rebuilding the economy and promoting fiscal responsibility in the federal government.

While Ribble's small-government stance won him support of the grassroots tea party movement, he also gained support from national Republicans.
