One of the2010 cycle's biggest surprises came from North Carolina's 2nd district, where Ellmers ousted Democratic Rep. Bob Etheridge. A nurse who grew politically active by opposing Democrats' health-care proposals alongside tea-party activists, Ellmers became one of Sarah Palin's "Mama Grizzlies" and rode the year's Republican wave all the way to a 1,489-vote victory.
A tea-party candidate, Ellmers vows to cut the size of government. She supports repealing the 2010 health-care law, slashing government spending and lowering tax rates beyond President Bush's cuts. She is also opposed to abortion rights and to same-sex marriage.
Born in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Ellmers was still young when her family moved near to Detroit. While studying at Oakland University, she also trained as a medical assistant. After graduating with a B.S. in nursing, she worked as a nurse at Beaumont Hospital.
After giving birth to her son Ben, Ellmers moved to North Carolina with her husband. She managed his medical practice in Dunn.
From the start, Ellmers made it clear she doesn't think she owes much to national Republicans. She also reiterated her proximity to the tea party, hoping that tea-party activists serve as watchdogs on her party - and on her. "I said I was going to be conservative in my voting," she said. "And I hope they keep me to that.
The Economy
A tea-party candidate, Ellmers entered politics as a staunch advocate of cutting the government and strengthening the free market. "I believe the less government in our lives, the more prosperous we're going to be, the more money we're going to have in our pockets, and the more we are going to be able to run our businesses and hire employees," she said.
During her 2010 campaign, Ellmers received decisive support from conservative blogs like Red State.
She has cited North Carolina GOP Reps. Patrick McHenry Virginia Foxx and Walter Jones as mentors.
