The sheriff of Hernando County, Nugent was the handpicked replacement of retiring Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R) to replace her in 2010.
There was a bit of a brouhaha about how the congresswoman went about it, however, as she Brown-Waite quietly asked Nugent to run in her place just before the primary filing deadline. The deal was officially announced minutes after the primary filing deadline, making it impossible for any additional candidates to jump into the sudden open-seat race.
