Path To Power
Nugent holds a master's degree and graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1991, neither of which he played up as credentials in his 2010 campaign. He was an active charter member of a local Rotary Club and served as the board vice president for a domestic violence shelter.
A former Air National guardsman, Nugent started his law -enforcement career in Illinois before moving to Florida to join the Hernando County sheriff's office in 1982.
A social conservative, Nugent opposes abortion rights and same-sex marriage. He supports Second Amendment rights.
With his three sons serving in the military or ROTC and his own record of serving in the Illinois Air National Guard, Nugent says of the war in Afghanistan, "If we're not going to be in it to win it, then we need to leave."
During his 2010 House campaign, Nugent was endorsed by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich.
Though no relation, in part because of their shared name, rock legend and gun enthusiast Ted Nugent campaigned for Rich Nugent during the 2010 campaign.
