Rob Bishop (R-Utah)

U.S. Representative (since January 2003)

(Congress Bio Directory)

Why He Matters

A longtime high-school teacher, Bishop won election to Utah's 1st district in 2002 after nearly three decades as a powerful GOP force. He had served for 16 years in the Utah House, rising to become majority leader and then speaker in his final term. After leaving the legislature in 1995, Bishop worked as a lobbyist for the National Rifle Association and later as Utah GOP chairman.

In Washington, Bishop has built a reliably conservative voting record. He has cited his experience as a teacher to champion local control of public schools. He supports private-school voucher programs and has vowed to fight reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act, saying the federal government should be less involved in education.
