Why He Matters

Woodall knows what it takes to be a congressman after working 16 years at the side of Rep. John Linder (R-Ga.), who decided not to seek reelection in 2010 and backed his former chief of staff to replace him. While the ultra-conservative Republican touts similarities to his former boss, he promised he would bring a fresh perspective to represent the 7th Congressional District.

From passports to veteran benefits, Woodall said he has worked hard for constituents when they had nowhere else to turn. He hoped to continue the attentive service he learned from Linder as well as fight for Linder's "common-sense government" views, including a national sales tax in lieu of income and corporate taxes.

Path To Power

Woodall was born Feb. 11, 1970, in Athens, Ga., where his parents were students at the University of Georgia. His family later moved to Avondale, Ga., where his father was an entomologist. He recalled trips to Georgia's swamps, where his father took him and his older sister to collect bugs.

He graduated from Marist School, a private Catholic school in Atlanta in 1988. He attended Furman University, where he graduated in 1992 and enrolled in law school at his parent's alma mater.

The Issues

Woodall's biggest issue and expertise is Linder's tax initiative called "FairTax," which would replace income and corporate taxes with a national sales tax. "I will be tireless in championing the FairTax and its principles of freedom. The FairTax will move power out of the hands of Washington and return that power to the individual."

The 2010 tea party's defining issues of limited government, fiscal responsibility and adherence to the U.S. Constitution are ideals that Woodall also embraces. "Uniting around those three principles so appeals to me," he said.

The Network

In 2010, Woodall campaigned with one of the biggest endorsements of the campaign: his former boss. Rep. John Linder (R-Ga.) said Woodall was uniquely prepared to take his place in Washington. "He is alone among the field of candidates in having real world experience moving federal legislation and turning the wheels of government for the benefit of those he serves."

In 2010, Woodall raised more than $317,000 - far bellow the millions of dollars his fellow Republicans across the country netted - that came mostly from health professionals and credit unions.
