Sander M. Levin (D-Mich.)
U.S. Representative (since 1983)

(Congress Bio Directory)
A House member since 1983, Levin has been vocal on issues that affect the Detroit suburbs in what is now Michigan's 12th district. When General Motors and Chrysler Corp. were staring down bankruptcy in early 2009, Levin urged a government rescue. "The federal government must also be a full partner" in the recovery of the American auto industry.
Bucking seniority, House Democrats in March 2010 elevated Levin to the chairmanship of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee over the unpredictable Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.) after former chair Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.) was forced to resign because of ethics problems. Levin was the third-ranking member of the panel and former chairman of its Trade subcommittee, which oversees customs and tariffs. Levin remained the ranking Democrat on the panel during the 112th Congress.

The grandson of Russian and Polish Jews, Levin was born in Detroit in 1931.
Raised in the city and as a summer employee of a Dodge factory, Levin's upbringing in the center of the American auto industry would come to shape his politics.
Levin is a loyal House Democrat, voting with his party 99.4 percent of the time during the 111th Congress.
In 2009, the House approved a Levin-authored provision that would tax private-equity firms at 35 percent, in line with the highest tax bracket for individuals, rather than at the previous top rate of 15 percent.
Levin is one of former House Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel's (D-N.Y.) closest allies, with the two often co-sponsoring major legislation on taxes and trade.
In September 2008, when Rangel faced pressure to forfeit his chairmanship amidst ethical allegations, Levin told reporters, "You're damned right he's still the chairman."
