DesJarlais, a career physician, won one of Tennessee's most closely-fought congressional races in 2010, against four-term incumbent Rep. Lincoln Davis (R-Tenn.).
DesJarlais argued Democrats were pushing a "socialist" agenda and that the country should be tightening its belt fiscally. He has endorsed putting a spending freeze on all non-budgetary items, as well as decreasing taxpayers' burden.
Born in 1964, DesJarlais is a native of South Dakota where his father worked as a barber and his bother was a registered nurse at Fort Meade Veterans Hospital.
Growing up, DesJarlais worked in his father's barbershop as a shoeshine boy. Later, he worked at a car dealership service shop, putting time in every summer while a student at the University of South Dakota. After studying chemistry and psychology as an undergraduate, he earned his medical degree from the university.
DesJarlais says he subscribes to the conservative philosophy of "less government, lower taxes and more freedom" and said he would "make sure that everything that gets passed this session falls within the parameters of those three principals we've campaigned on."DesJarlais signed the" Contract from America," a framework for reform developed by members of the tea-Pparty movement yjay included tenets based on limiting the role of government.
DesJarlais said he would push for congressional term limits, saying "that's gonna be something that will always be on the front burner."
During his 2010 campaign, DesJarlais had stumping help from several congressional members including then-House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and fellow Tennessee Republican Reps. Marsha Blackburn and Phil Roe. Like DesJarlais, Roe was a practicing physician.
