Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.)

U.S. Representative (since January 1995)

(Congress Bio Directory)

Why She Matters

Jackson Lee has been one of the left's prominent voices on national security. Along with a handful of House Democrats, she filed a lawsuit to prevent George W. Bush from launching the Iraq war. A previous vice-chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus and an advocate of sanctions against Sudan, she was arrested in front of the Sudanese Embassy in 2006 during an anti-genocide protest.

Ever since she crushed a sitting congressman by 26 points in the 1994 Democratic primary, Jackson Lee has represented Texas' 18th district in central Houston, the second most Democratic district in the Lone Star state. She has championed immigrant rights, for instance introducing legislation allowing undocumented workers who have lived in the country for five years to become legal permanent U.S. residents.

The Network

After Jackson Lee mulled a bid in 2010 to lead the Congressional Black Caucus, she ultimately deferred to the next person in line, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.).
