The 1981 parade, which commemorated the 12th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, moved up Fifth Avenue to a rally in Central Park. The Stonewall riots began after a police raid in the early morning at the popular gay bar the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village in New York. The three days of violent demonstrations marked a major turning point in the modern gay rights movement. G. Paul Burnett/AP Buy Photo
