A newcomer to elected politics who has spent his life building up his family's funeral-home business, Southerland unseated seven-term Rep. Allen Boyd (D-Fla.) in Florida's 2nd Congressional District in 2010.
Southerland's campaign built its argument on the idea he could save jobs and the Constitution from Boyd and the Democratic leadership in Washington. Southerland's plan to create jobs is simple: cut government taxes, regulation and spending.

Southerland was born in 1965 in Panama City, Fla., where his family established a funeral-home business.
After earning degrees from Jefferson State Junior College and Troy State University in Alabama, Southerland returned to Panama City to work for the family business, becoming co-owner and president.
Southerland says his political views reflect his district's conservative values.
Though Southerland hasn't outright called for the repeal of the 17th Amendment, which allowed for a popular vote to elect senators, he has been critical of it on states' rights grounds. When the amendment was passed, "I believe that that balance between state and federal started to become out of balance."
Among his key endorsements during the 2010 House race were Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.), who represents the neighboring Panhandle district, and former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-Fla.).
